NEWS – B-2 to fly Global Power mission (and paris air show)

496.  B-2  to fly Global Power mission
MCCONNELL AFB, Kan. (AFNS) — The B-2 Spirit’s first
Global Power mission will take it to Europe and the Paris Air Show
in June, Gen. John M. Loh, Air Combat Command commander,
announced during the May 13 naming ceremony for the Spirit of
Kansas.
Nearly 15,000 spectators watched as Sen. Robert Dole, R-Kan.,
and Rep.Todd Tiahrt, R-Kan., accompanied by Loh and Kent Kresa,
chairman, president and chief executive officer of Northrop
Grumman, prime contractor for building the aircraft, unveiled the
Spirit of Kansas name on the wheel well of the aircraft.
During the ceremony, Loh lauded the aircraft’s first year
performance and announced:
"A B-2 and its crew will take-off from their home at Whiteman
AFB, crossing the Atlantic, and deliver munitions on a bombing
range in Scandinavia . . . an impressive demonstration of America’s
reach and firepower.
"Before completing this transatlantic sortie, the B-2 will appear
at the famed Paris Air Show for all the world to see.  This combines
Global Power projection and global presence."
A multi-role bomber capable of delivering both conventional and
nuclear munitions, the B-2  stealth bomber is a dramatic leap
forward in technology and represents a major milestone in the U.S.
bomber modernization program.  The aircraft is capable of bringing
massive firepower to bear,  in a short time, anywhere on the globe
through previously impenetrable defenses.
Spirit of Missouri, the first operational B-2,  was delivered to
the
509th Bomb Wing at Whiteman AFB, Mo., home unit for the
stealth bombers, on Dec. 17, 1993.  Since then, ACC has named
four additional aircraft, the Spirit of California, Spirit of Texas,
Spirit of  Washington and Spirit of South Carolina in ceremonies
held in the respective states.

New Fighter Series–General Dynamics F-16 (37 of 44)

Several RF-16 reconnaissance versions have been proposed by General
Dynamics.  In 1988, the USAF decided at least in principle to replace
the aging RF-4C Phantom fleet with RF-16s.  These aircraft would carry
the Control Data Corporation ATARS (ADvanced Tactical Air
Reconnaissance System) centerline pod, which would carry a variety of
sensors, including an electro-optical videotape system that allows
images to be transmitted via digital datalink to a ground station,
providing ground commanders with reconnaissance capabilities in
real-time.

Bomber Series–Boeing B-29 Superfortress (8 of 29)

One B-29-BW (42-6412) was fitted with special camera installations for
photographic reconnaissance work and redesignated F-13 (in the F- for
photo reconnaissance series).  The standard bombing equipment and
defensive armament were kept.

An additional 117 B-29-BWs and B-29As were similarly modified as F-13
and F-13A to carry three K-17B, two K-22 and one K-18 cameras with
provisions for others.

In 1948, the F-13s were redesignated RB-29 and RB-29A.

Re: Straw poll

Okay, here is my input on the straw poll:

a> 20 more B-2s
Yes, I would actually push the total B-2 force up to 60
aircraft, and base them in CONUS, but ready for use when trouble
breaks out.

b> V-22
I support the MV-22, and I would not only replace the Marine
CH-46, but also the Army CH-47 with it. EV-22, I’ll not use. We can
build new Hawkeyes if we need to. SV-22, I think we need more S-3s and
I wouldn’t knock the SH-60F on the basis of size alone. As for the
AV-22, I think that would be good as a MH-53J replacement, with a
little extra firepower.

c> F-22 deployments:
Have the F-22 replace the F-15C one-for-one in all units that
currently use the F-15 in the Active duty Air Force. And ASAP

d> Needed projects:
Navy: Replacement for A-6. Not knocking the F/A-18E, but that
would be a good replacement for the F/A-18C. The A-6 replacement
should be more towards an attack capability, but I will admit I’d like
it to be able to do some air-to-air.
Army: I’d like to see the Comanche and Longbow serve as
primary helicopters not used to carry troops. Let the Comanche handle
scouting, and the Longbow do the attacking. I’d also like to see the
Javelin completely replace the Dragon
MArines: AV-8B+ is good, but I’d like the gun to be replaced
with a copy of the A-10′s Avenger to give the Marines better CAS units.
Air Force: Upgrade the A-10 for day/night and all-weather
attack capability. Also, use F-111s to replace F-4G Wild Weasels until
a Wild Weasel version of the F-117 can be developed.

e> Common rotary wing airraft for the four services:
Simple. UH-60 Blackhawk and V-22 Osprey.

Well, here are my answers. Tell me what you guys think.

DOD Open House 5/20 – Andrews AFB

Does anyone know about this event – what’s going to be there, etc.?
I know it’s tomorrow, but I just read about it.

Thanks.

MiG-29 Pilot

Hi does anyone know what happened to the MiG-29 pilot that defected
with his MiG-29 5-6 years ago, I know he wrote a book "Fulcrum" and
that there was a brief 60 minutes episode on him  2-3 years ago, but
nothing else, Do defecting pilots go through a "Witness Protection"
program, and just vanish ? Or does the Air Force put them to work ?

ME-262 New-build

A while ago someone made the comment about new ME-262′s being built.
The chap doing this is "Herbert Tischler" out of Fort Worth Texas.
Evidently he is building them exactly to specs except replacing
the engines with modern types. A few years ago he built new
"Grumman F3F biplanes fighters" to original specs.
